Train Lengthening Programme: East Grinstead Station

East Grinstead Station is the last location on the busy East Grinstead commuter route to East Croydon and London.

Capacity analysis undertaken as part of the Route Utilisation Strategy indicated that passenger demand in this corridor was set to increase substantially over the next 10-20 years. This achieved an immediate 10% increase in capacity by 2013.

In order to increase capacity and ease overcrowding in the London and South East area, this location (along with many others) required infrastructure alterations to accommodate longer trains.

A programme of platform and train lengthening was therefore developed, allowing stations to accommodate 12 carriage trains at peak times.

Train Lengthening Programme: East Grinstead Station

The constituent parts of this project were:

  • extension of platforms 1 and 2 to accommodate 12 car trains
  • major alterations to the crossover junction layout just north of the station to accommodate the longer platforms and provide additional operational flexibility
  • relocation and upgrade of the station starter signals to modern LED type
  • change to the track circuits at East Grinstead Station for reliability purposes.

Train Lengthening Programme: East Grinstead Station

The key project output was to provide changes and additions to the infrastructure at East Grinstead Station to accommodate 12-car trains.

This has led to an immediate 10% increase in capacity, set to increase in the longer term.

Greater operational flexibility is expected to improve service reliability, as a result of the revised track layout.

The project was delivered on time and on budget.
