Paisley Corridor Improvements (PCI)

The purpose of the Paisley Corridor Improvements (PCI) was to provide additional capacity for existing Ayrshire and Inverclyde services.

The project is recognised as one of the most complex ever undertaken in Scotland, with the complexity spread across all disciplines. Access to construct the works was very limited on the heavily trafficked corridor with 24 hour operational capability being maintained for the vast majority of the challenging construction period.

 

Paisley Corridor Improvements (PCI)

The project was a significant £169m investment in the infrastructure and included:

  • construction of a new third line between Gower Street Junction and Hillington
  • construction of a new four track railway into Paisley Gilmour Street
  • renewing all associated signalling equipment with additional functionality, such as bi-directional capability
  • installing new signal interlockings for the Shields and Paisley areas
  • transferring all signalling control from Paisley to the WSSC.
  • lengthening the freight loop at Elderslie and remodelling the access to the freight yard
  • constructing two new platforms within the train shed at Glasgow Central.

The specific works carried out during this project included:

  • 15 km new track
  • 2 new signal interlockings
  • 40 new point ends
  • 17 new signal gantries
  • 11 point end up-grades and conversions
  • 289 new signal control points
  • 3km new drainage
  • 10 signal interlockings re-controlled
  • 585 signal control points transferred
  • 231 new overhead line structures
  • 36km of new overhead wire
  • 1 new bridge deck
  • 2 new platforms at Glasgow Central.

Paisley Corridor Improvements (PCI)

The main objective of the project was to provide significant increased capacity to Ayrshire to Inverclyde routes (see map above).

The project successfully upgraded a key rail corridor into Glasgow, and was truly multi-disciplinary combining improvements to tracks, signalling, freight, and platform capacity.
