Amtrak Electric Traction Repair Project

Location: New York (NY)/New Jersey (NJ), United States

Amtrak Electric Traction Department completed a helicopter aerial flight assessment of Amtrak’s catenary, signal and transmission system structures, electrical lines, components and system assets along Amtrak’s Electric Traction System right of way.
In a portion of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor in NJ that was surveyed, numerous defects were discovered in the Electrification Infrastructure. As a result of some of the defects progressing to failures before they could be addressed, Amtrak sought to proactively address the remaining defects to assure reliable service to customers.
Network Rail Consulting (NRC) was commissioned by Amtrak to provide support and guidance on the most effective way to achieve this goal through the provision of an Electric Traction (ET) repair plan.
NRC delivered the following 5-point repair plan:
- Data Evaluation;
- Network Analysis;
- Stakeholder Interviews;
- Resource Optimization; and
- Optioneering.
NRC delivered the following key project outputs:
- The development of an ET repair plan;
- Report identifying improvement opportunities; and
- Executive presentation outlining the key items within the report.
