Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) is delivering the Sydney Metro (SM), Australia’s biggest public transport project. The City & Southwest (CSW) forms phase 2 of the Sydney Metro Program. Sydney Metro is delivering key infrastructure for CSW.

Sydney Metro commissioned Network Rail Consulting (NRC) as the Authorised Engineering Authority (AEO) and the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) for the City and South West Metro Infrastructure, which is being delivered under Sydney Metro’s Rail Infrastructure Maintainer (RIM) accreditation.

Sydney Metro City & Southwest (SMC & SW) is an extension of the North West Rail Link (NWRL) from Chatswood running under the harbour and underground through the Sydney Central Business District (CBD). It also includes the upgrade and conversion to Metro standards of the existing Sydney Trains line to Bankstown including the conversion of the stations. The CSW extension runs underground from Chatswood to Marrickville where it joins the conversion of the existing Bankstown heavy rail line. There was extensive tunnelling from Chatswood to Marrickville, construction of new stations integrated with over station developments, conversion of the Bankstown line to metro standards and operation as well as significant development to Central Station to accommodate the metro and provide an additional underground concourse. There are seven new Metro Stations planned at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross (North Sydney), Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street, Central Station (new underground platforms) and Waterloo.

The ultimate objective of the ISA role is to provide an independent view that supports the assurance and acceptance of suitably safe systems and assets. This view and associated recommendations are presented to the Sydney Metro Network Assurance Committee (NAC) to support its decision making.
