Liverpool – Manchester Electrification
In mid 2009, the Department for Transport (DfT) published Britain’s Transport Infrastructure: Rail Electrification. It confirmed government support for a programme of electrification, including the Liverpool to Manchester railway.
This project formed part of the wider North West Electrification Programmes (NWEP) stretching from Liverpool, Manchester, Preston, Leeds and Sheffield. It includes the electrification of the Trans-Pennine line.
The DfT reconfirmed support for NWEP in November 2010 following a Comprehensive Spending Review and subsequently added further additional railway routes (Trans Pennine) following a further spending review in November 2011.
Liverpool – Manchester Electrification
The work comprised:
- structure clearance works
- parapet compliance works
- installation of Permanent Road Rail Access points
- installation of 25KV Overhead Line Electrification
- provision of additional Power Distribution Supply points
- immunisation of existing signalling and telecommunication equipment
- migration of affected local telecommunication transmissions to Fixed Telecoms Network (FTN)bearer network
- signalling alterations to facilitate journey time improvements
- alteration to existing method of protection at private level crossings.
Liverpool – Manchester Electrification
The Liverpool – Manchester Electrification Project facilitated the introduction of electric rolling stock servicing existing and proposed new routes between Manchester International Airport and Scotland.
The works included improvements in capacity and journey time and subsequently enhanced diversionary capability for passenger and freight services.
The project has delivered a keystone of the wider electrification programme in the North West and North of England.
