Paisley Gilmour Street Roof Renewal
Paisley Gilmour Street station and viaduct is a Grade B listed building within Paisley town centre conservation area, Scotland.
The four platform station, which combines one of Scotland’s earliest railways with the spacious style of the infrastructure’s late Victorian expansion, is considered historically, to be one of the hundred most important stations in the United Kingdom.
The station was originally built in 1839 and today caters for more than 5 million passengers annually.
The station canopies had become life expired and therefore required replacement. This major renewal also presented the opportunity to enhance other aspects of the station.
Paisley Gilmour Street Roof Renewal
The project goal was to replace the existing canopies, constructed in the early 1970s, with a new overall roof at Paisley Gilmour Street Station. A new lighting scheme was provided, along with associated telecoms alterations. The scheme included the following individual elements:
- the roof was fully covered with 5,000m
- 2 of glazing
- refurbishment of the existing lattice steelwork to retain the features of the listed structure
- the replacement of glass roof spans from north to south across both the platforms and canopies
- a fully bespoke integrated roof access system to afford safe access to all areas of the roof for the purpose of future maintenance
- reconfiguration of the Overhead Line Equipment
- structural strengthening of the station column foundations
- renewal of roof drainage system
- painting of all platform buildings on the station.
The works were successfully undertaken without impacting normal station operations or scheduled train services.

The project outputs were:
- deliver an improved station environment to improve the journey experience for passengers and staff alike
- renewal of the station roof to deliver 25 years to next major maintenance
- deliver a station environment that will provide opportunities for future commercial and operational developments.
